Every home-school mom at one time or another bakes bread. My mother was no exception. Hands covered in flour, faced flushed from the warm kitchen, she kneaded bread until her hands were raw. When her masterpiece was finished, she coated the warm braided loaf with butter and proudly served each a piece like a chef would serve a delicacy. Metaphorically the bread served as a symbol of the Living Bread which she labored to serve to all those around her.
When it came to teaching us the bible, a regular study wouldn’t do. Determined to make the bible come alive, she animated voices and directed her children like actors in a Broadway production. Even today I can remember sighing as she blind-folded us to fully understand the desperation of blind Bartimaeus in the book of Matthew. People desperate to instill the truth into the next generation go to the extreme… and my mother was no exception.
Every summer in a small garage on Meeker Street, she would invite neighborhood kids on Thursday afternoons to sweat on plastic chairs and learn about Jesus through characters attached by Velcro on felt boards. Most people called it the Good News Club and my mother was no exception. She would have us memorize scripture and always include an frozen Otter Pop or inexpensive candy as a reward when answering that gospel meant Good News.
Years later she laid in bed unable to walk, talk, or control bodily functions while the cancer deteriorated our hope and chemo deteriorated her body. On good days she would read her bible and draw palm trees in the margin of her bible as a reminder that the righteous will flourish like a palm tree. She nibbled on bread every morning to calm her nauseous stomach… in Shakespearean form it became her bread of life.
My mother is no exception to pain, suffering, and trials. But in the face of poverty, disappointment, and death, she’s exceptional.
Every person thinks their mother is amazing. But does your mom serve you Bread of Life, blindfold you, hand you an Ottor Pop, and draw palm trees like Picasso? Well, my mother is alive today and can blow out birthday candles. And that dear friends, is why my mother is exceptional!

Ok, I know this is weird, but as an honorary adoptive daughter, I want to send you a BIG hug and wish you a wonderful mother's day!!! Love you, Mama!
AWWWW I love me some Millie, you mom is great.. I love to hear the stories and wonder where in the world did she get the time and energy to do all that.. I love it and it encourages me that one day my children can talk about me the way you do about your mom.. She is a wonderful lady that truly beams love. When I met her and she prayed with me she held me like I knew her or I was one of her own. That is only Love the Lord can give, she is truly a Godly woman and I praise God he healed her so I got the chance to meet her. You are who you are because of your parents and It is so refreshing to see Proverbs 22:6 come to life. Gives me hope that I wont jack up my son by homeschooling him.. well I still might. hahah
You guys really inspire me to be more and do more.. Happy Mothers day to you both!!!!
Muahhhhh!
Absolutely beautiful!! Your mom is amazing and I'm so glad I had the opportunity to meet her (and you, too!). Happy Mother's Day!!
Jihan!!! Thanks so much 🙂 I will pass it along.
PS I hope your sister's wedding plans are coming along well!
This is beautiful!! What a special tribute!
I was homeschooled…my mom went through a candy-making phase instead of baking bread…but there was most certainly a felt board!!
I didn't grow up with my Mom around every day, but would see her asleep on the sofa or the bed. My Mom worked rotating shifts, so her availability to be "MOM" was not there. I remember her sleeping as I left for school, came from school, rarely ever getting a chance to talk to her. Frequently I would not see my Mom for 7 days at a time, then would have her home for 4 day, those 4 days were busy getting groceries and cleaning. I had to take part in the upbringing of my 2 youngest brothers. Don't cry for me, don't feel sad for me, because she raised me the best way she knew how. She was not shown love as a child so there fore, did not show us love as we grew, Today I am PROUD to say that my Mom has learned to say "I love you" and be careful, take care, if you need anything, call me, and best of all, Kiss us Hi and good bye! Today, Mothers Day..my MOM made ME Pancakes and a perfectly cooked egg for brunch. I went to spend time with her today after Church and she said, I am happy you came to me so early, are you hungry, sit, I'll feed you!…My Mom was the best she could be with what she had, I may not have had home made bread, but, I am very proud of the Momma that I have, shes is rough on the outside, but soft on the inside…I just had to pray to have that shell broken, so with the shell being broken, the Word of God can get through just a little easier. So, please pray that my Mom, Olga will come to know Jesus. I love this woman with all my heart. She, with out the input of Grandparents has been the best Grandma to the Grandkids ever! I Love you Mom!….I told her today that I loved her.
I hope to be even a fraction of how good your mom was to you guys to my kids…hope she had a wonderfuls mama's day!
Beautiful!
Such an Awesome example of a Mother..for other Moms. I also enjoyed our little gift of her words on the card recieved @ church, Thank you!
What a beautiful tribute to your mother!
Yes! Millie is an amazing woman of God! You are truly blessed B, to have such wonderful Mom 😉 This year was our (my sisters and I) first Mother's Day without our Mom (passed away 8-31-09) and it was very hard not having her here to hug her and kiss her and tell her I love you but God gave us the strength throughout the day and we are blessed to be surrounded by Angels in our family. I told at least 3 people yesterday "Enjoy your Mom today" I know I did when she was here and even though I miss her terribly, one day SOON I am going to see her again 🙂
Great post!
