Struggling to find adjectives and create word pictures is a daily hurdle. Couple this with the fact that I am a lover of words and obsessive compulsive, I’m constantly finding mistakes in printed text.
I can’t help but twitch when an idiom is used incorrectly, a word is pronounced wrong, or they’re, there, and their is all jumbled together. I blame it on my self-diagnosed OCD tendencies, which admittedly runs in my family.
When I read mispelled worship lyrics at church on the overhead screen, I will march over to the audio booth and inform them. If there is a wrong URL listed on website, I’ll leave a loving comment. I’m an editor to a fault! Like this one time when I saw a cholo marking up the gas station with graffiti near church and yelled furiously, You’re ruining this city and you can’t even spell “crazy” correctly!!! [Note: I would not recommend doing this.]
I will correct errors in others because I would like the same level of excellence to be expected of me. Last week my father sent me a text message informing me of a wrong source for quote I listed on my confessions post.
It’s humbling when my immigrant, English-second-language father who pronounces sangwich instead of sandwich edits my writing or corrects basic spelling [I still struggle with the -i before -e rule]. He’s caught mistakes in the minutia of my writing and I appreciate him beyond words.
But his editing goes beyond grammar rules and content cohesion. He edits my life. Typos, syntax, and communication errors occur in life. Without a good editor, we will delusionally continue in life achieving a less than stellar grade, all while correcting others and they’re mistakes.
We need to be editors and have editors in life. Who corrects you when you’re wrong? Who is editing your choices? Who are you editing? Editing is needed in us and of us (Matt. 7:5). Consider this free license to edit my content… offline and online 😉
I've actually lost my husband his longtime friend by brining an error to his attention, he was speaking ill of another person, saying that we as Christians should "hate" this person, I kind of "put a mirror to his face" and he didn't like what he saw. But instead of realizing that I was doing this because I cared about him, he assumed I was questioning his faith and told my husband that he could no longer be our friend. He kind of acted like he "outranked" us because he spent more time AT church than my husband and I (choir director, bible study, church, etc) He thought that by having enough "works" to cover himself, as if he earned the right to sin by his own acts.
OH GOSH!! your, you’re, they’re and their… my eye twitches when people get those mixed up! *shudders*
k back to reading.. just had to get that out of my system
Sangwich.
Javi says this. All. The. Time.
I die.
Thanks for making me smile!
I said sangwich for a long time…that and pangcakes..haha…anyway…my friends are good about telling me what's up..although i don't think they do it as much as they would because i am super sensitive ( not in the angry way, but more like the baby way)…i think also because i dog myself so much to them that they probably have heard me say where i need editing before they even say it…i think i am a decent editer…my friends probably say i sugar coat it or say it too nice…but hey i try…we laugh because we say i would have a hard time being in an HR or management position because i would cry with the person i was firing or repremanding…haha…it's true, i probably would…
I guess I will no longer send you anymore emails or text messages! My editors are my accountability group as well as my husband. I don't like it but I am very thankful they love me that much to correct me.
Does this mean I can edit your outfit choices, too? 😉
My 9th Grade English teacher once made a guy at a tomato stand fix his misplaced apostrophe. She remained until poor Joe changed Joes’ tomatoes to Joe’s.
And I have a constant ever present “editor” with the name we all know and love. But iron sharpens iron and I’m allowing people to help him for the first time ever – and their editing has been sweet.
Thank you for this Bianca
And today, I pray that God shines his love on you and yours.
Thank you so much for this! I needed to hear this today.
I always have my tv set to CC, that’s because I like to spell words correctly. I’m not perfect and since most of the time I’m on line on my phone I make a lot of mistakes and I bug myself.. I get on my own nerves. I tend to want to correct others but can’t because I am sensative to being corrected, especially my spelling, I try hard not to make mistakes. My sister for example.. she doesn’t know the difference between own and owe.. NOBODY has corrected her because she will beat you up…haha
However, when I am judgemental, gossip (yeah I do that sometimes), my son is quick to correct me.
My husband has learned in these few months to ask me this… “is your comment true,, noble, just, pure, lovely and is it a good report?” I learned this at our women’s study group and told him about it.. ever since he has used it on me. It bugs me but am thankful. I also have sisters who rightly so correct me.
I’d be foolish to not accept correction…
My husband grew up saying SANGwich, too! Another one that drives me nuts is COGweb (his mom still says this!). (My 5yo daughter, who has a vocabulary WELL beyond her years, still says "doorNOG." Cracks.Me.Up. I say she gets it from her father.)
He also used to say "out of BALANCE" (instead of bounds!). Ha. Years ago, in the heat of an argument, told me to stop, "giving me the third degree BURN." HAAAAAA. We still laugh about that one. 🙂 He's cute. I'm keeping him.
He used to be REALLY bad with grammar/word choice/spelling, but 11.5 years ago he married someone a bit, ahem, "word OCD" and has made quite a transformation over the years. (He also got a college degree and two Master's Degrees, and became quite the smarty-pants. All of the learning and reading has done/does has certainly helped him become a better speaker and writer.)
Ok, and I thought I had a bad english, but when I read this, I think I'm ok…
See you in may, testing your german…lol… 🙂
Love,
Markus 🙂
Um, you do. Duh.
I don't get to may "edits" which leads me to think two things. 1. They aren't really good friends? or 2. I'm to cautioned to not make mistakes and therefore I'm flawless! I don't know…hmmm…sounds like a self evaluation day. ____Thanks for the provoking thoughts…
Crazeee esa.
Hi Bianca! I have stalked your blog for quite some time! 🙂 You are darling and I love reading your words of (godly) wisdom! 🙂 I have to tell you that I have OCD, too…and I am constantly correcting others and their grammar and punctuation. I know that I make mistakes, too….but I am so quick to "find" others' mistakes. I have to chuckle, because as I was reading this post….I noticed that you misspelled "mispelled." I didn't want to point it out, because I have never commented on here before…and I don't want you to think I am passing judgment. I totally love you (though I don't know you)….and the only reason I am commenting is because you seem to have a great sense of humor! 🙂 I hope and pray that you will get a laugh out of this…and that you won't block me from viewing your blog! Ha!….Also…..I was at the Beth Moore conference (at Mariners) in July, when she mentioned a "certain, young speaker." Then, shortly after the conference….I connected the dots and realized she was talking about you! You and Beth are two of my favorite Bible teaching women!! Okay…one more thing…(and I promise I'm not really a stalker)….but was your husband at Target (Irvine Spectrum) on the day after Christmas?! It was pretty early in the morning and I saw a dude in the line to make a return- that looked just like him (I saw your wedding pics online). Random, I know. Okay….one last thing, and then I promise to stop (really and truly)…..my hubby is a photographer and so I enjoy checking out different photography sites. I have enjoyed looking at your sister's work! You guys have a beautiful family. Okay…..have a super weekend and please forgive my long-winded comment(s) and "correction!" Please forgive my run-on paragraph and excessive usage of exclamation points, parentheses, and dot.dot.dots, too! 🙂 Love in Christ, Kristi M.
YOU CAUGHT IT!!! I purposely misspelled the word to see if anyone would call me out… you were the only one.
You're an awesome editor, Kristi. Thank you so much for telling me… and telling me with grace.
I'm so bummed I didn't get a chance to meet you at Mariners for the Beth Moore event. I have to admit, when she said what she did, I nearly died. No really, died. Which then lead to me to think that if you saw me early in the morning at Target the day after Christmas, I hope and pray I didn't look like a truck ran me over!!! I'm so embarrassed. Beth would never go in public looking like death 😉
B
Hey again!
Phew!! I am so glad you responded and don't hate me! 🙂 I think it's hilarious that you did that on purpose!
I am happy to have corresponded- via blog- with you…and I wish I had seen you at Target! I only saw [who I thought was] your hubby. I would have introduced myself to you…and honestly…..I don't think you could look bad if you tried! Ha ha….you're probably right…..Beth would never think of going out without looking her best! She is so adorable!
Have a super weekend…and I do hope to meet you in person someday! You are an encouragement and a blessing and the Lord is using you in such mighty and powerful ways! Keep preachin' it, sister!
(hi their- eye wish you uh nise nite.i wil bee looking forwurd to you're next post. I'm sure it wil bee good to!)….. <—Sorry….couldn't resist!!
Love in Christ,
Kristi
I'm glad I read the comments before pointing out your "mispelled" misspelled. Also (sorry!), I thought it was funny that you wrote "I'm a editor to a fault!" Instead of "I'm an editor"… but you did that one on purpose too, right B??
XOXO,
Cindy A.
Ok, now I'm SUPER embarrassed. Uh, no. That was a legit mistake. And a really, really ironic one. It's changed now 😉
Funny..thats why I dont like to e-mail you I'd rather talk to you in person instead. HA
