The lapis lazuli color of the jar makes me feel like I’m in a different era. I open the container like Marilyn Monroe and layer creme on like sweetly scented frosting. Ooooh, I feel like I’m in a a tan dress standing on top of a subway vent in a gritty New York avenue with ruby red lipstick and a coquettish laugh.

How can something so simple and non-complicated have staying power? Nivea lotions have been around for over 90 years and the original formula hasn’t changed since it was created in Germany by Oskar Beiersdorf. Something needs to be said about a brand and item that has staying power.

It’s 2010 and by jove, I love that stuff!

I have been working on the In The Name of Love summer series for months now. [And when I say working I mean walking around in circles on the verge of tears talking to myself like the crazy cat lady in Venice Beach.]

I’ve gone from a rotating stage with the band descending from the ceiling a la Bono to acoustic guitar and a candle. I’ve gone from doing an exegetical dissertation of the entire old testament to a theme study of finding your life’s calling from one verse. I’ve gone from wearing my hair all big and sitting in an ornate gold chair to wearing no makeup and a bun while sitting on a stool. Yes, I’m a hot mess.

This morning I had an epiphany while pretending to be Marilyn: don’t mess with the perfect formula.

God’s word is heavy, thick, dense and sweetly scented with grace and forgiveness. Sure, Nivea has packaged differently and gone global within the past 90 years, but the base of the amazingness of Nivea is not the packaging or marketing. It’s what’s inside the jar that matters.

I’m committed to keeping God’s word like the original formula of Nivea. Uncomplicated and simply amazing. I hope you can join in via the web or in person in July. The study is coming together and for the first time ever, I’m putting together a homework/study guide so we can exhaustively extrapolate the heavy, thick, dense goodness of God’s word! I’m nervous and excited all at the same time, so please pray for me as God’s word is going to be dispensed 🙂

If you see me wearing a tan dress with red lipstick on July 6th, you’ll know I’m wearing my Nivea creme and looking for a New York street to laugh in.
