The museum was full of interesting facts and statistics I never knew. There were 2,000 dogs underfed and waiting to be released. 15,000 landmines buried beneath the ground along the border. 21,000 Â foot soldiers and patrol thwarting people from coming across. The wall was not to be penetrated, crossed, or broken; a concrete barrier preventing freedom and the promise of liberty.
Liberty.
Freedom.
Change.
I read about a story of a young boy in West Berlin who wrote a letter and attached it to a balloon in the hopes of encouraging someone in Communist Germany. Eight years later, the Berlin wall separating a nation came down. A middle aged man with no education or car crossed passed the concrete wall and walked three miles to the house of the now teenage boy, handed him the deflated balloon, and accompanying letter and wept on his doorstep. The man told the boy his letter gave him hope of a new future. Of freedom. Of liberty.
The man lost hope and asked God to give him a sign that his life mattered and God cared for him. Just then, he saw a blue balloon floating down his street. He caught the balloon and read the letter and swore one day he would meet the boy from West Berlin. In 1989, the man with no education or car thanked the boy for giving him hope and allowing him to believe in God.
Walls are big. But God is bigger. We have opportunity break down barriers, send balloons, and give hope. Are we setting captives free? Don’t forget that it is for freedom He sent us free! 🙂

I'm not sure what sort of ministry you are doing in Berlin, but I have a good friend on staff at NCC in DC (Mark Batterson's church) who recently moved to Berlin. NCC is working on launching a coffeehouse there where the Church can intersect with the community since most Berliners would never set foot in a church but would talk in a coffeehouse. Here in the 'land of the free, home of the brave' we have our very own Berlin Wall, but instead of keeping communism out it is meant to keep the unwanted people which more than not means the poor. 1,951 miles of steel, chain-link, and concrete this imaginary line breaks the North American Continent (US/MEX) up that at one time was border-less and Native tribes from the furthest point South of what is now called South America (Patagonia) and Tribes from the most Northern point traveled freely. Today only those of privilege may travel the human-made borders freely everywhere on Earth; Israel/Palestine, Mediterranean/Spain (nature made, human imposed), US/Mexico are just a few of the most controversial ones.
If you are not a citizen of the Empire (United States) and/or you don't have money to purchase legal travel visa/documents then the borders and the soldiers 'protecting' that border will do as they wish to keep them out.
Jesus wouldn't be down with borders.
