The power of social media is akin to a double-edged sword. In the Nashville conversation for 12 Cities/12 Conversations tour, the issue of relational connection, authenticity, and identity surfaced. The conversation was the next to final gathering on the road to Lausanne, next month with 4000 leaders from around the world to discuss the challenges that Christians everywhere are facing.
Being with Tyler Stevenson-Wiggs, Margaret Feinberg, Dr. Anthony Bradley, Paco Amador, and Jenni Catron forced me into a tention I’m wrestling with. Who is managing social media well? How do we keep our identity true to who God made us? How are YOU managing facebook, Twitter, formspring, MySpace, YouTube, and Vimeo?
another great question 🙂 i think the best thing to do is to be true to who I am in Christ. i'm not perfect, but i have a perfect savior. i sin every.single.day, but i'm forgiven and therefore am called to forgive in that same way. social media is a place where it's easy to have drama, words are miscommunicated, and it's difficult to truly understand other's hearts, but it's also a place where we can really reach people where they're at!
This is the tension I'm in. I love it and hate it all at the same time?! Thanks for your insight 🙂
You were FANTASTIC last night as a part of the panel! Your perspective was very necessary.
Thanks for the challenge. 🙂
So thrilled that we finally met in person! And thanks for continuing this discussion beyond last night. Anxious to hear how everyone processes this!
Hey Jenni! I'm stoked we met too. The conversation has totally been ringing in my mind and I love/hate this tension.
I magage facebook in how I am careful who i add to my friends list. I get a lot of friend requests but i don't always add everyone. If i have to communicate with my family via facebook then something is wrong it happens on occasion. I step back sometimes and keeping it real to me is calling a friend and not texting to see how they are doing.
Totally! If it's something serious, I REFUSE to use texting or social media to communicate that.
Christian media is getting our message heard. It’s about telling our story, and making that story connect with our audience, the problem is we must know our audience.
This is a great book a friend wrote about it:
Branding Faith by Phil Cooke http://www.brandingfaith.com/
I am using facebook right now like a newspaper to let people I know (clients, friends, family) how incredible life is. I am using my very life, testimony and two carrers as a fitness trainer and mentor to interact deeper in my community. I am helping them with info and solutions as a expert on my field about how to have a better healthy soul, body and Spirit, but not in an imposing way but creating an open dialogue , type of sharing way. Creating deeper relationships! ♥
Wow, I really enjoy Phil Cooke! Big fan of his stuff. Now if I just balance it all out like him, I'll be in a good spot 😉
What a tough topic to cover! In this day and age, we almost have a voyeristic personality and want to know what eveyrone is doing every minute of the day. Did Jesus do that? Hence why so many people are addicted to social media. And forgive me if I am completely messing this topic up, but one of my friends at church said it perfectly just last Sunday. I had asked her why she wasn't on facebook or twitter. Both she and her husband committed to each other that they would not create any virtual relationships online, and work hard at creating authentic relationships in person.
Part 2 of my comment. I loved that she said that, and it made me think hard about my "online life" with facebook, twitter and my blog. Are my relationships authentic? I know that I have met a lot of people, just as you have, online and later met them in person. You have created this "virtual" bond and when you meet in person, it grows even stronger. I have found that when a lot of my virtual friends find that I am a follower of Jesus Christ, they gain more respect for me because I am trying to live an authentic life as HIS. Again, maybe I am missing something. I think with the way social media is heading, Christians can start leading by example and have healthier toungues when speaking virtually. And our churches can do the same. Thanks B for opening up this dialougue. Safe travels.
Don't apologize for this insight. It's needed! I hear what your friends are saying and totally appreciate their commitment to keeping things relational, but I want to be able to find the balance in both. Who knows if it's doable?! But I'm trying to find that balance. Thanks for your comments!
Hey friend, this one is thought provoking…and I like it. I don't know how I feel about it, yet, but it's started stirring up some thoughts, so thanks for that! : )
I know!? I have tons of thoughts on this too. UGH! I hate this whole tension thing!!!
Obviously, you're obsessed with the internet and social media since you can't even stay away from it on your honeymoon for crying out loud.
This is a complex issue! I'm about to ramble…consider that a disclaimer!
While I'm not heavily in social media, I have seen it open doors to new avenues/ministry, forge relationships, inform, and advance the message of the gospel.A byproduct of that is becoming known. You are a classic example of this. Your first goal (I'm going to safely assume) was to point us toward Christ. The tension is good. A big part of your ministry is online. Remember, a pastor rarely knows everyone in the congregation intimately and yet people are ministered to each day. In that regard, I absolutely see you living out your identify in Christ.
For me, it's constant prayer and setting appropriate boundaries. I know that my motives (currently) would be wrong and I would fall into a stronghold if I had a twitter or facebook. I can't manage social media…in the past, I've let it manage me. While I have a blog, most of my readers are actually from my church. I would LOVE to be a media maven like you someday, but first I need to FIND my identity in Christ and be CONTENT in that identity. Not easy to do.
That's where I'm at too. I want to seek to find that perfect balance. It's just so hard to find what is true balance!
Thanks for continuing this dialogue beyond last night, Bianca. I think this is a much needed conversation!
a couple of thoughts:
1. I wonder if sometimes we don’t over-analyze social media and in the process we become too strategic which quickly steals authenticity. When we’re okay with breaking the “rules” we’ll be closer to balance I think.
2. I believe authentic relationships can flow out of social media. But in order for that to happen we have to be intentional about taking the online offline. We have to seek out opportunities to connect with people offline who we typically only connect with online.
3. I think striving for balance is extremely important but I’m not sure we’ll ever reach it…I think it’s a constant evaluation & learning process.
4. I think at the root of this discussion is the issue of insecurity. That leads us to be someone we’re not, to try to create an image for ourselves. For me personally my online interactions became more authentic when I got over caring what about what others thought and rooted my identity in Christ & Him alone. That lifts pressure to try to be a certain someone and we just live out the person God has created us to be.
hi there …. its really nice people are sharing thoughts and comments like this …
.. here's my very very little insight on the topic, the social media is truly great on people reaching out to each other, connecting with people who on a physical level would shy away from conversations like this but that said I agree with all the comments on finding a balance. I recently had to close my facebook account because I had exams to study for and it was really a major distraction and am really wondering if I might go back after the exams. If we want to build authentic relationships its going to have to be outside of the online world, that said I find the online platform a very exciting place to to get God's word out.
thanks for the topic.
okay well since I primarily use all this stuff for business purposes (photography) but I also use it to stay connected with my teens and let them know about events and such (such is bi-vocational)… you wouldn't BELIEVE the amount of social media I have:
1.personal facebook that became somewhat business
2. business "fan" page
3. youth group "fan" page
4. business twitter
5. Youth group twitter
6. business website
7. youth group website
8. business blog
9. youth group blog
10. wedding blog
RIDICULOUS!
But what I've found is that they all merge on occasion. And I think in some weird and crazy way maybe God has allowed that on purpose. I tweet (from my business account) on a regular basis about things that are said in church. It's not everyday, but at least every sunday while in church, and then often other bits and pieces of God here and there. It is who I am. I cannot separate Jesus from my business. And while I dont necessarily BOMBARD people with it, it's there. Subtly. And because of it, there are people I dont even know that have asked me questions about the Lord and even asked for the address of my church to come and visit!
I think the biggest thing is trying to look at each of those things and ask myself, "What is my purpose for this?" And then work to use that piece of social media to accomplish that purpose while staying true to who I am and WHOSE I am.
PS… you're gorgeous. 😉
PPS… my mom is my friend and follows every one of those. And she ALWAYS calls me on things she thinks could be taken the wrong way. She is my filter. I love it. It's a HUGE help. I always think "would I be okay if my mom read this?" and if I would be, then I hit send.
okay and ONE MORE THOUGHT 🙂
There is something to be said about allowing people to be connected at the level they are comfortable with. For instance… when it comes to the youth group… there are teens that feel like they know us and all that is going on with us and yet I've only met them once! But they follow us on twitter, read our blog, check out our website and friend us on facebook. And that's what they're comfortable with. They may not be ready to set foot inside a church yet… and maybe they never will be… and while our ultimate goal is obviously to point them to Jesus, for some kids (or people in general) social media allows us to connect with them in ways THEY are comfortable. Do I know them personally? Maybe not. Have I even met them? Sometimes. But are the relationships genuine? Heck yes. Maybe not in the same sense as they would be with your best friend… but these kids are genuinely hearing about Jesus. They are genuinely connecting with people who genuinely pray for them. Do we have to have a face and a name to pray for them? Nope. Do we have to know who they are for God to touch their hearts through what is going on and what happens to be said on the internet? Nope. There may come a day that they feel comfortable on a deeper level, but social media allows them to be connected at the level that they feel comfortable at. Does that make any sense? I hope it does.
I didn't get to watch the discussion because of the stupid time difference so I may be totally off point here, or I may just be showing my immaturity as a Christian but here's my two cents.
In terms of the ability to create an identity online that isn't God's identity for us, it's no different to me going to an out-of-town Church were no one knows me and creating a character for myself there, making up stories of epic mission trips I have taken, words that God has spoken directly to me which have influenced events in my life, and blockbuster worthy tales of leading people to Christ. My conscience and my identity in Christ tells me that is irresponsible and no good will come from it. It is possibly easier to create an identity online, but no less irresponsible.
Wow, what a great question. I try to make sure that in everything I do it honors Christ and bring glory to His name. It's not always easy and I fail all the time, but managing what you put into your mind helps to keep yourself from being led into situations that compromise your faith. Great topic to get me thinking this morning! Thanks for posting!! Have a blessed Saturday!

Thanks for your publication. I would also love to say that the very first thing you will need to perform is determine if you really need credit score improvement. To do that you will have to get your hands on a duplicate of your credit file. That should really not be difficult, since government mandates that you are allowed to receive one no cost copy of your actual credit report every year. You just have to inquire the right individuals. You can either look into the website for the Federal Trade Commission and also contact one of the leading credit agencies specifically.
You made some first rate points there. I appeared on the internet for the problem and found most individuals will associate with with your website.

I have realized that of all different types of insurance, health insurance coverage is the most debatable because of the conflict between the insurance coverage company’s obligation to remain adrift and the client’s need to have insurance plan. Insurance companies’ profits on health plans are incredibly low, as a result some firms struggle to make money. Thanks for the thoughts you reveal through this web site.
