As an adult who loves reality television and trashy tabloid magazines, reading is harder to do without a cuddle partner and animated narrator. But his words are engrained on the forefront of my mind and reading is part of my daily activities much like eating a balanced meal.
In honor of well-balanced reading, here’s a list of what’s currently on my night stand:
- Protein: Patrick Lencioni’s The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. I had the opportunity to interview Patrick at Catalyst two weeks ago and I was so inspired my his passion for organization health, I downloaded his book. I’m not one for stuffy leadership guidelines and protocol, so Patrick’s five-point litmus test was perfect for me. You can check out the interview here. I’m almost done with the book and I’ve basically realized—to no surprise—I’m dysfunctional. Good thing I have his book to help me!
- Veggies: Breaking Free by Beth Moore is a 12-week bible study that is basically kicking my butt, shaking me silly, and slapping some sense into me. I’ve never done a more comprehensive bible study on strongholds, addiction, and freedom than her discourse through the book of Isaiah. Oh me, oh my, this is some serious stuff. Siskel, Ebert, and Bianca give it three thumbs up! 😉
- Carbs: In The Chemistry Between Us: Love, Sex, and the Science of Attraction neuroscientist Larry Young and journalist Brian Alexander identify the neuroscience that drives the mysterious behaviors associated with affection. I’ve labeled this as my intake of carbs because carbs turn into sugar and sugar feels like love. And ice cream. I think I might do a full book review when I’m done. It’s wildly fascinating. Note: this isn’t a Christian book. *Gasp!*
So there you have it, leaders! I’m always open for suggestions for life-changing books, so please let me know what you’re reading and why I should too. 😉
As a side note: Catalyst featured an article I wrote about Why Women Don’t Like Women’s Ministry. Feel free to mosey on over and read it for yourself.
hi there beautiful lady!
I am also a huge fan of reality t.v. until God above gave me a ‘reality check’ on forgiveness through “Do yourself a favor….Forgive” by Joyce Meyer! I am a tough cookie when it comes to forgiving those who have wronged me….or I them… this book was read in two days… with that being said now I am currently reading “Change your words, Change your life” by Joyce Meyer… let’s just say, she doesn’t fail me! I have soooooo many books that they need there own room. 🙂
have a great one!
The Golda Meir Story. I checked it out of the childrens section of the library. 😉 Nice, easy read.
Les Miserables, unabridged…at night…by a fire, in a deep armchair, wearing knee-length socks bunched down to the ankles, sipping jungle coffee, while rain pours down outside… just. because. you can.
Changed my perspective in unexpected ways.
p.s. Ten times more beautiful if you read it in the original French 😉
My daughter, Jansina, has published 2 books recently and a free short story. You can get her free short story, Sanisfreeda, here:http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/122457. If you like that, her books are available there or on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, etc. Her genre is Christian Young Adult with romance and mystery woven in. She has a BA degree in writing and after a year of law school, gave up her full scholarship to write and publish. Hope you like it!
“7: An experimental Mutiny Against Excess” by Jen Hatmaker. A friend of mine who is adopting read it…and she recommended it. It’s been hard for me to put down. It explores the idea of biblical fasting and reducing unnecessary “wants” in our lives in 7 different areas of life (things like food, clothes, media, etc).
you’d like the stack of books by my designated work space (aka: the coffee table in my living room)–when I’m sitting, sometimes the books can stack head-high!
I’m always a fan of a good book list! I know what you mean re: Breaking Free. I’m going through it with my small group this semester, and I’m definitely a bit black and blue. SO good though.
I also left Catalyst with a few books; I’m currently reading Start With Why by Simon Sinek. I’d highly recommend it.
Other greats from this year – The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson, Girls Like Us by Rachel Lloyd, and Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie. Because I like lists, I’m tracking my reading at http://bit.ly/MyReadingList. All of these were worth the read!
Breaking Free is awesome, challenging and more….any of her books are great too. I really liked “Get of of the Pit”
I just finished “Anything” by Jennie Allen. Definitely worth a read….
Am re-reading “A Thousand Gifts” by Ann Voskamp. A definite MUST read…..
Then there’s “God Loves Broken People” by Sheila Walsh, “Stumbling into Grace” by Lisa Harper and “What Women Fear” by Angie Smith…
plus a pile more….
We hermitesses do a lot of reading…
You can borrow any of these anytime 😉
Hey, I know this is late, but this post popped into my head today.
Please, if you haven’t already, some time please read Practicing the Presence of God by…uhh…Brother Lawrence? Its a small book, you can read little bits of it at a time, which is great for you since you’re a busy person.
You know what…I might just send you a copy when I’m in England for Christmas…OH and Amy Carmichael’s IF- most convicting book on the planet.
Expect some small Christmas packages from jolly old England. Hope you like old books.
