I’ve never been one to care if people look at me while I pray. Since high school, into college, and up through grad school, I openly prayed before I ate my food around teachers, peers, and friends.
No, not loud ostentatious prayers—simple thanks for God’s providence. Amen.
But I’m from Los Angeles. The land of reputation, peer pressure, and self-representation. I’ve been laughed at, stared at, or uncomfortably waited upon by servers with hands full of food and not a clue what do with it while heads are bowed and eyes are closed. It’s LA. And I love it.
But SweetBabyJesusPeople, have you been to NASHVILLE?! It’s the most spiritual city I’ve been to. F’real. They make us Angelinos look like Philistines! 😉
But I digress. As a Foodie, I do exhaustive research for the must-eats of a city. Whether it’s breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, or dinner, I want to know all the hot spots!
[Insert Pancake Pantry here]
If Jesus ate in Nashville, he’d eat at Pancake Pantry for the following reasons:
- Pancakes are modern day replicas of manna: circular disks of gluten goodness. Duh.
- People pray before their meal. Like, everyone. Seriously.
- Pop icons Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber always stop there while visiting Nashville. [And we all know I love me some pop music!]
I quickly grabbed Annie’s hand and I prayed for our meal. When I opened my eyes, the people around our table opened their eyes and picked up their heads. They were praying with me?! Oh yes ya’ll, they joined me in prayer!
Shortly thereafter, a couple walked in and sat next to us after being served their food. The large, intimidating man looked like he was straight thug life forevah and his rotund girlfriend looked like she could throw me clear to Memphis. But within a nanosecond of being seated, he grabbed his girl’s hand and prayed a soft, sweet prayer of grace.
And stared, mouth gaping wide, at the level of flagrant gratitude given to God. It was like the United Nations of Pancake Unity with a Latina, a writer, a affluent business couple, and two urbanites.
If you’re ever in Nashville, eat at Pancake Pantry. But be ready to pray with your neighbors 🙂
This post totally tickles me! I hate that I missed getting to see you while you were here in Nashville, but I am so happy you got to experience the pancake yumminess! Nashville is the heart of the Bible belt… where praying in public is accepted and everyone waves at the car passing them on the highway.
Oh and I LOVED Fido. Great cafe!
this is so awesome…and so great to have another fellow foodie on here! i love it when strangers come together in love and pray to God…there really is no greater feeling than that unity!
well, that and eating great pancakes.
From one pancake eater to another: I coudn't agree more 🙂
Oh that is stinking awesome!!! That is just so wonderful that they were praying with you!! I just love that!!! 🙂 So I will note to self to go to Pancake Pantry whenever I go to Nashville. 🙂 Thanks for letting us know about that! Have a great day!
You're so kind Tara 🙂 I got your email by the way!
That's it. I always thought I'd move someplace new. (I have a habit of not going back to states I've been to before. 😉 ) But that does it. I'm moving to Tennessee. (ha)
Annnnnd you can find a God-fearing singin' man in Nashville too 😉 Bonus!
i’ve always wanted to visit Nashville! Why! well country music is said to have been born there of course!!!
I do feel convicted though. I realized there’s a lack of prayer in my life. I do pray… just not enough maybe…
Norma, you KILL me with your love of country music! 😉 You're crazy!
Oh my goodness, I love the Pancake Pantry. A friend moved up there (to Nashville, not to the Pancake Pantry, although I would not blame her…) from Texas so when I went to visit (since she was within driving distance of SC, woot!) she said we just HAD to go there. And the wait in line outside on a cool fall morning was totally and completely worth it. Prayers and all 🙂
Oh the line?! Yowzers. That's a sign of how great that place is. YUMMY!
I LOVE this!
I always pray before a meal, whether it's out or at home – but saaaame thing, I get the stares after I lift my head, or the akward mumbles from the waitress.
Country music and a city not afraid to boldy pray! I think I need to move…..thanks for this post – it makes me smile! 🙂
(And now I want big fluffy pancakes! But without the gluteny goodness. Yay for Celiac Disease!)
(And now I want big fluffy pancakes! But without the gluteny goodness. Yay for Celiac Disease!)
My reaction exactly!!
I have to google Celiac Desease now!
Pancakes and cheese! ♥
You are so funny. I need to go back to Pancake Pantry and witness all this prayer. 🙂
Love it, you are beautiful AND hilarious, deep AND effervescent, now I will give you $10 bucks (cash money now) to turn that in to a rap, post online and we can send it to the pantry and you can start a pancake, come to Jesus, viral revival! Girl, if anyone can, it's you!!
I'm SO jealous, really! My husband & I took our kids and Winston (oversized pugdog) to Missouri this summer to see his family. We are HUGE foodies, love Food Network, etc. Anyway, before we left we checked websites on all the places to eat (my mouth waters thinking about pancakes) and Pancake Pantry was our place to stop. When we got to Nashville I was bursting with excitement like I was 6 and going to Disney, because Nashville is my favorite place that I've ALWAYS wanted to go to. We all exited the car and then we realized we had…Winston 🙁 We ended up getting takeout bar-b-que from Jacks BBQ which is fabulously yummy stuff. A tear fell on the window as we drove away from Nashville, maybe next time 🙂 Needless to say, Winston will not be going on family vacation again, even though he was as well mannered as a little man, other than the lethal pug stinkies 🙂
I don't even like pancakes, and I LOVE them from Pancake Pantry. 🙂 Good stuff. If you are ever there again, you should get a cupcake from the gourmet cupcake place in Franklin….can't remember the name, but it's super duper yum!!!!
I just love your boldness and humor…
and a foodie too!!!
for His glory… even better!
Okay, you're right. You definitely weren't in L.A. Enjoyed the post!
How awesome! Love the manna- pancake comparison. My 16 year old son LOVES pancakes. I'm sure he'll appreciate the analogy. LOL!! 🙂

Today, I went to the beach with my children. I found a sea shell and gave it to my 4 year old daughter and said “You can hear the ocean if you put this to your ear.” She put the shell to her ear and screamed. There was a hermit crab inside and it pinched her ear. She never wants to go back! LoL I know this is totally off topic but I had to tell someone!

@chels I know what you mean, its hard to find good help these days. People now days just don’t have the work ethic they used to have. I mean consider whoever wrote this post, they must have been working hard to write that good and it took a good bit of their time I am sure. I work with people who couldn’t write like this if they tried, and getting them to try is hard enough as it is.
Grande borne! Agradecimentos para tomar o momento de escrever algo que é realmente leitura do valor. Demasiado frequentemente eu encontro a informação inútil e não a algo que é realmente relevante. Agradecimentos para seu trabalho duro.
