Oh Hallow’s Eve, I don’t like you. You’re frightening and scary and make all things goolish create appeal with the dark of heart. I don’t trick nor treat, but not because of a high religious seat. I cringe, I cry, I binge, I sigh! Oh me, oh my!
Yeah, I was never a poet, people. Don’t judge me.
But someone asked through facebook what I thought about celebrating Halloween recently and decided to post the video I posted last year (on Vimeo) on this subject. It’s way too long and I’m all over the place, but bear with me. Disclaimer: Don’t ask me what was going on with my hair or makeup. I’m going to blame it on Ichabod Crane, the headless horseman, and his wretched tale.
If you have any thoughts on the matter, feel free to jump in. If you have any questions or want to see the previous conversation last year, check it out here.
Well said!
Very nice 🙂 Speaking the truth in love! Preach it!
Personally I do not like Halloween at all. In my perspective, it glorifies and celebrates fear. Fear of death. Fear of wonderful things God created, (like spiders.)
As Christians we should not fear death. We should not fear God's creation, but be in reverent awe. So yeah-I'm not thrilled to find a spider in my bedroom, but I do have an appreciation of God's creation of them-especially since they eat mosquitoes! 🙂
In truth, the whole point is to strike fear into death, to show that we don't fear it. The whole point of dressing up was to scare off demons.
In a modern context, Halloween is a day of empowering the weakest members of our society, children. For one day, children don't have to be afraid of death and strangers. For one day, every house is a welcoming place and grown-ups are friendly and generous. For one day, make-believe is okay.
If anything, it is the closed-minded views of many believers that are driven by fear, even fear of fear.
Of course, you are right, Christians should not fear, but they do. They fear that anything that isn't their religious cultural norm will somehow be powerful enough against the might and spirit of the eternal creator and Lord of all of creation and bring death and damnation to poor little souls who just want to have some fun, dress up, and get some candy.
I think that the greater fear should be that our kids will turn into repressed, unhappy, unfun prudes who cannot enjoy the simplest pleasures because God might strike them down for enjoying enjoyment itself.
I would have to agree with gmvfx. The world takes something that can be fun and harmless and takes it to a (scary and nowadays sexy) extreme, which causes many Christians to run away from associating with it and missing out on a little fun.
I got this from a good friend of mine and it is from a reputable source: http://www.gty.org/Resources/Articles/A123_Christ…
Well said Bianca. I so agree that educating our children is the best way to deal with the subject. Once I told my daughter that the foundation of this holiday was to glorify the enemy and not our Father she could really care less what other kids around her were doing. Thanks for sharing.
Very well said, Bianca!
P.S. I like your hair and make up. 🙂
I loved Halloween as a kid. It was the only time my mom would sew and she made awesome costumes. My cousin and I were clowns (mirror images) when we were two, I was a pumpkin when I was 3, a ballerina when I was 4, Big Bird when I was 5, an angel (my dad made some awesome angel wings) when I was 6… My little sister was a ladybug when she was 9 months old and to this day, my dad calls her bug. We never associated it with anything dark. My dad is very artistic and we carved pumpkins every year in the garage while my mom toasted the seeds in side with sugar and cinnamon on them. I had not really thought about it in a long time, but I'm really thankful we came together as a family to have fun. When it comes to my (future) kids, I plan on celebrating Halloween in the same, lighthearted way.
Okay, I'm off to a church retreat. We are all coming back in time on Sunday to be ready to go trick-or-treating with our kids/niece/nephews 🙂
I still love Halloween and had a positive experience growing up too. I'm carving my Hello Kitty and Storm-trooper pumpkins tonight! 😀
Its truly amazing what knowledge can do for our children. I too was educated on the origins of Halloween early on, and I believed it empowered me, and allowed me to feel confident and strong about choosing not to take part in certain activities on Halloween. I can't do all that scary stuff anyway…I get too many nightmares. 😀
I do have one comment. While the date of December 25 is not the day Christ was born, in comparison, Easter is a more accurate representation of the day Jesus was resurrected, because it is always the Sunday following Jewish Passover. I think this is one reason why some Christians may be more suspect of Christmas as a holiday (which is wholly unrelated to Jesus birth) as opposed to Easter. I wasn't sure if you were making that equivalence, but I wanted to state that.
Whatever the original intentions of Halloween, it's a fun day for kids to dress up and get candy. I've celebrated Halloween since I was able to walk, and it's never affected my Christianity. Great topic!
We do not let our kids ( our ourelves ) celebrate Halloween. Mainly because it is the exact opposite of Christ came to do. Defeat death. In essence, dress up fun or not, you are knowing or unknowingly particiaptng in a spiritual warefare far beyond wat any of us can comprehend. Things that take place and happen on this night around the world is a mockery to Christ. My family knew a woman that was raised in a very large coven and she tol us of th rituals and quite frankly sacrifices that to place on that night and it would blow yur mind. And obviously grieves Gods heart. I think we could be a light on any other night than this.Obviously live, go out, talk, and love. There can be a harvest festival that kids can dress up on and goriy God by appropriate costumes and fun times of harvest. I am jus tsayin
as a pastor who deals with alot of people in Recovery, i can say alot of the things we dablle in open doors to satanic activity in our lives. Lev. says to not turn to spiritual mediums and the like. But satan is very clever at spinning his lies that its ok….. If we open the door to pretending that dressing up as witches etc is an ok practice that GOD is not offened by , we have a serious problem.
We totally enjoyed Halloween as kids. We participated in the Harvest Festival at church and would even go trick or treating in a friend's neighborhood. However, we were never allowed to choose costumes that had any dark references. So, I was ever a witch, my brother was never a monster, etc.
Also, the year I was Cindi Lauper, I had to wear something else to the church festivities. Apparently, my mom was less worried about me enjoying my number one pop diva costume at school, but she was too horrified to let her friends at church see it. Ha!
Good memories!
I'm not participating in halloween because in my opinion it glorifies darkness and is literally a witch's holiday.
I'm with Bianca, reading about where halloween came from scared me, and as a child of light, I'm gonna go ahead and steer clear from anything so connected with darkness. This is just my opinion and I don't look down on other Christians who do dress up and do things for halloween: my parents let me do it as a child and this is my first year really considering not dressing up. After praying about it I decided that I definitely do not want to celebrate this "holiday".

Great blog post. The things i would like to contribute is that pc memory needs to be purchased when your computer can no longer cope with that which you do by using it. One can set up two RAM memory boards containing 1GB each, as an illustration, but not one of 1GB and one of 2GB. One should make sure the manufacturer’s documentation for own PC to be sure what type of memory is necessary.
It is my belief mesothelioma is definitely the most lethal cancer. It’s got unusual traits. The more I look at it the greater I am assured it does not work like a real solid flesh cancer. In the event mesothelioma can be a rogue virus-like infection, hence there is the prospects for developing a vaccine as well as offering vaccination for asbestos exposed people who are at high risk with developing long term asbestos linked malignancies. Thanks for revealing your ideas about this important health issue.
Hello my friend,
Furthermore, i believe that mesothelioma is a scarce form of many forms of cancer that is usually found in those previously exposed to asbestos. Cancerous cells form inside the mesothelium, which is a safety lining that covers a lot of the body’s body organs. These cells ordinarily form in the lining on the lungs, stomach, or the sac that encircles one’s heart. Thanks for sharing your ideas.

In these days of austerity plus relative stress and anxiety about running into debt, a lot of people balk against the idea of utilizing a credit card in order to make purchase of merchandise or pay for any gift giving occasion, preferring, instead just to rely on a tried and also trusted method of making payment – hard cash. However, if you’ve got the cash there to make the purchase in full, then, paradoxically, this is the best time for them to use the credit cards for several motives.
