O Muses, O high genius, aid me now!
O memory that engraved the things I saw,
Here shall your worth be manifest to all!
—Dante Alighieri, The Inferno
The muses were beckoned by early Greeks to aid authors with prose, poem, or play in creating beauty; works of remembered art influencing the soul. Goddesses of word or song, a muse could inspire works of grandeur. Works inspiring artists even today.
I’m working on a project and I could really use a muse. Whether it’s music, poem, recipe, or prayer, I’m desperate for something. Anything. The new year is approaching and I want to make this year count.
If you have any source of inspiration, book of motivation, or prayer of calibration, please hook a sister up. I’m desperate.
In the words of Jesus, I have not because I ask not. So I’m asking. Begging. Pleading. Imploring. Your insights are invaluable!
I will search for something that will help you i'll ask my tweeps!
The Butterfly Effect by Andy Andrews
"Every single thing you do matters. You have been created as one of a kind. You have been created in order to make a difference. You have within you the power to change the world."
Oooooh I love this!
To get spiritually refreshed, I pray the Psalms when I don't know what else to do. To get creatively inspired, I grab a bunch of my favorite books and start reading bits and pieces of them. The diversity of ideas and information is always refreshing.
Did someone ask for music suggestions?! My spidy-senses where tingling even all the way over the pond! I'm not sure if I've told you about him before but Nathan Lee is awesome – his new album is killer but there are individual song recommendations at the end of this http://www.louderthanthemusic.com/document.php?id…
If you want something to read and push you into action – A Million Miles In A Thousand Years by Donald Miller if you haven't read it already – awesome awesome stuff.
Ok – my go-to creativity sparks are as follows (in said order below);
1 – Ken Gire: Windows of the Soul; Walter Brueggeman; Thomas Merton: New Seeds of Contemplation; Henri Nouwen
2 – Cooking: Getting my mind out of the sphere of the intellectual engages my right (creativity) brain and gives me the greatest ideas
3 – Painting: A room typically. That room you have hung up paint swatches on forever, just go paint it. Paint fumes do wonders for creativity! Put on some Christmas music while you are at it.
4 – Walking into the bathroom. I seriously do not know why this stimulates my creativity – honestly I think it is just because I have pushed my brain so long to try and figure it out, I finally give up, my brain muscles release because I have moved from sitting to standing – and as soon as I walk into the bathroom – BAM! I get some creative genius thought
5 – Going on a walk. Nature's creativity inspires my own…
π Hope that helps!
crazy love (book by francis chan) was a huge inspiration…i love going to michael's and barnes and browsing the magazines and christian book section…the christian bookstore make me wanna camp out there…oh yeah and hgtv for sure ….as far as music…i love shane and shane….their words hit home…and your blog for sure brings me inspiration…!!!
the book that inspires me the most is "a voice in the wind" by francine rivers. it's the first book in the mark of the lion series. it's fiction but the protagonist of the book has such a sweet, quiet spirit that whenever i read it i feel inspired to pray throughout my day and not be so quick with my sometimes biting answers to people in my life. anyway, it's a good book to read when you're laying in bed before falling asleep π good luck with your search for inspiration!!
I would also suggest crazy love by francis chan. That book is awsome!! We read it as church staff together and it was amazing!!

Bianca,
when I need a creative kick,
I go to the bookstore, grab a huuuge bunch of magazines with great pictures, or books -hopefully something related to the subject and sit turning pages for an hour or two or three. No deep reading – just glancing.
Walks in nature help too, especially early, in the quiet of the morning. My projects are usually visual though.
It seems to me that your project is verbal.
Could stimulation with contrasting writing styles help? Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs, Hemingway, Shakespeare, haiku poetry… and then quiet reflection. And then crazy brainstorming. and some more.
You know what has inspired me lately? Stories of animals modeling God's compassion and grace. Seems like I have recently received a lot of forwarded emails about amazing animals. Young cheetahs catching a baby antelope and then all of them playing together as best friends before parting to hunt and run another day. A crippled pigeon (named Noah) nurturing orphaned baby rabbits. A dachshund nursing a tiger cub. These animals reach beyond their normal instincts to give friendship and aid to even their bitterest enemies. Why can't we do this?
I was inspired after reading Mark Batterson's In a Pit With a Lion on a Snowy Day.
One thing that is really tangibly relevant in society today is the need of fathers/father figures in the upbringing of daughters.
I'm reading "Bringing up Girls" by Dr. James Dobson and it is so relevant. I'm sorry if I keep using that word, but it's so appropriate. π
The studies and stories he shares prove how the stabilizing force of a father/father figure can keep the self-esteem and self worth of our daughters in check.
I may be biased since I was raised by my dad. Also, I have seen the effect of the presence and absence of my husband in my daughter's life. He relocated to another city before my daughter and I met up with him 2 months later. In that 2 month time period my daughter's personality and demeanor changed SEVERELY for the worse.
Once we were all together again and my husband's presence was immediate, she was back to her obedient, good natured self.
Just my 2 cents!
I like to listen to Handel's Messiah (the entire oratorio!) for inspriation overload! Powerful stuff that influences both emotion and intellect. It's just hard to go wrong with straight-from-Scripture lyrics and good music…even better, though…listen to it while baking! π
One of my favorite pick me up books is "The Alchemist" by Paulo Coelho. I get inspired every time I view the painting Purple Petunias by Georgia O'keefe. Very simple, but I love the vivid color of purple and the disciplined detail that is so apparent. It inspires me to get better at my craft and to have more discipline to pay attention to details. Hope this helps! =)

"Father Can You Hear Me" song from Tyler Perry's movie, "Diary of a Mad Black Woman"
My all time favorite from the movie, "The Gospel," is "Now Behold the Lamb" based off of the story of The Prodigal Son
Key quotes from the video:
"Don't let those situations in your life keep you from having a relationship with God! NO, you NEED to KNOW HIM!"
"You know many of us talk about "Oh, I'm going to get to know God tomorrow." TOMORROW ISN'T PROMISED and you can have SALVATION today!"
AND my absolute FAVORITE nugget of truth:
"There is NO perfect church! If there's a perfect church, it stopped being perfect from the moment you and I walked in! But there IS a PERFECT GOD!"

WOW. You all are amazing! Thank you so much. So, so much!!!
I'm most inspired by watching people in their element, watching someone else create something I cannot, seeing the Creator's hand in the hands of the created. π
Check out this video of Travis Cartlett create his painting "Till Death." It's achingly beautiful! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EN-iirfVJ4
Believe it or not…giving. From clothes, shoes, a meal to someone in need, time, the list goes on.
Whatever it is…YOU should feel it. In those times, God has given me THE most amazing creative ideas.
One time someone shared with me a couple of things that either help you unwind and by doing so you get more creative. The important thing is to get your mind busy in things you like and enjoy, so here's what I suggest…
* Go for a walk, eat an ice cream and be a tourist for a little while.
* Laugh out loud
* Sing out loud and dance like David did π
* Get a good book and seat under a tree or in your case in the beach
* A worship time with God it fills up the soul and helps your creativity flow
Hope it helps!!
Hmmmm.
damnyouautocorrect.com is good for teh lulz to clear your head. I also think that taking a complete break from my pressures and watching something absolutely hilarious or extremely dramatic puts me in a different world. Reality shows don't cut it – you need something scripted. Modern Family, Cougar Town, and Psych are all good for laughs. Psych's first four seasons stream on netflix, and of course it's the best, but MF and CT are shorter π
Some people exercise, which just makes me grouchy. I nap or take a shower.
I went to Michael's recently and spent $20 on some really basic painting supplies. I had a blast painting my first picture and can't wait to do it again. I have 0 artistic abilities, but something about giving a color and shape to my feelings was totally cathartic and got me to the point of being okay again and ready to face my piles of work.
Love you!
Disturb us, Lord, when
We are too well pleased with ourselves
When our dreams have come true
Because we dreamed too little,
When we arrived safely
Because we sailed too close to the shore.
Disturb us, Lord, when
With the abundance of things we possess
We have lost our thirst
For the Waters of Life;
Having fallen in love with life,
We have ceased to dream of eternity
And in our efforts to build a new earth,
We have allowed our vision
Of the new Heaven to dim.
Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,
To venture on wider seas
Where storms will show your mastery:
Where losing sight of land
We shall find the stars.
We ask you to push back
The horizons of our hopes;
And to push us in the future
In strength, courage, hope, and love.
-Sir Francis Drake
Praying for you.
I just read My Husband, My Maker by Sharon Ries. Man, that book inspired my heart to be smack where God needs it to be. I don't know if this helps, but I do know the prayers will. lol
What is my source of inspiration? I grab inspiration from everywhere. I think the greatest thing to do is to pray that God will unveil your eyes to finding inspiration everywhere. I love being able to sit in a park and just watch people or go to an art museum and see the beautiful pieces of art. Inspiration is everywhere and its all around us. I have read some amazing books and I think that constantly reading from all sorts of authors is the greatest thing you can do. It gives you perspective from all angles. When you have a good perspective then inspiration can flow from that. Just something to think about.
The book, "Daddy, Do You Love Me?" changed my life inasmuch as a book (that's NOT the Bible) can change a life. It carries a bold message that many churches refuse to address…yet it's one that MOST women need to hear.
