The past is a cyclical event. In my Church History 101 class, I remember the professor explaining that revivals preceded movements. The class—full of budding pastors and passionate church planters—was in awe and furiously took notes on what revival looked like, why revival occurred, and how to emulate or inspire movements. But the part I remember the most was not the bullet-points on what, why, and how… I remembered the when.

In a beautiful explanation of simplistic theology, he slowly said, Repentance proceeds revivalNo matter what people tried to do to manufacture movements, nothing could cause more reactive growth and mobilizing power than humble people who realized their need to repent.

Throughout the canon of God’s word as well as history, we see spiritually hungry people cry out for freedom, for forgiveness, for hope, for more. And God—our good, gracious God—always provides.

From the exodus out of Egypt to the exiles of Babylon, there are the few. The few who get on their faces and cry out in sheer desperation for God to show up and heal the sick, free the captive, feed the starving with the belief that He will. Verse after verse, chapter after chapter, book after book, generation after generation, century after century, the few lead the way for the masses.

Tomorrow there will be a gathering of the few. The few who believe with humble excitement and anticipation that the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament is the God of TODAY. In music halls and living rooms and church sanctuaries there will be a remnant of passionate warriors who want to—actually want to—see the hand of God do amazing things for our generation and the Church. But more than just wish and hope and dream for this to take place, we believe it WILL take place. The few will make way for the masses to believe that our generation isn’t done or apathetic or disengaged, but we are discovering what it looks like to serve, live, and love in the grace of God

The planning. The meetings. The conversations. The dreaming. Who would’ve thought that late-night conversations, email communication, and pipe dream chats would turn into  an actual thing?

This living, breathing, beautiful thing is a coming together not of personalities or platforms, but of people.
