While in Kenya, I realized I knew of global hunger and poverty… but I didn’t know who it affected. Now I have a greater compassion for those who live in poverty and want to do something about it!
Compassion is an organization I believe in. I’m leery of non-profit organizations because of recent pilfering of money and funneling of funds from corporate organizations claiming to provide aid to those in need. However, around a dinner table with missionaries and a peppering of pastors, I was able to meet Dr. Wes Stafford.
Wes in one of the thee most humble, disarming, gentle men I’ve ever met. As he spoke of his days on foreign soil as a missionary’s child, the love he had in his eyes spoke in every language, every tongue, every beating heart. The poverty he witnessed as a child in a third-world country provide fertile ground in the soil of his heart to start a movement to end child poverty.
Years later, Compassion is a world-wide organization equipping children to learn more, do more, and be more. I’m honored to partner with Compassion in equipping children across the world to be change agents in their society. I beg of you to click on the link to learn more about how YOU can change the world… one person at a time.
Love out loud.
- If you sponsor a child, will you share your story?
- If you want to sponsor a child but have questions, ask away!
I sponsor a boy in Ethiopia! I carry his picture with me everywhere. When I went to look for a child to sponsor I wanted to find one that had special needs. (long story but my brother has Cerebral Palsy and my two best friends are deaf so special needs is always close to my heart.) Anyway, one night I went on a search and found Obsa who has a hearing problem with one of his ears. I knew immediately I was to sponsor him! There were other factors but that was the main one. I LOVE IT! I want to sponsor as many children as possible!
YAY!!! I was hoping someone would share a good story… and you have!
Thank you for being so generous with your money. I'm humbled that you spend money benevolently… even by sponsoring MY trip to Kenya.
Much love!
I sponsor a boy in Bolivia. Through World Vision. When I began my search on the site it was exciting and heartbreaking…so many children…my heart ached because you want to choose them ALL but reality is I can't. I chose Eber because he shares the same birthday down to the year as my oldest child. I am now looking for a little girl who will also share the same birthday as my youngest child.
It's such a privilege…we write to each other and share pictures…but I am mostly happy about being able to have a small part in his life….hoping that one day we will meet…face to face. 🙂
Yes, what a GREAT privilege! I love the idea of matching it up with birthdays.
Keep doing what you're doing!
I have sponsored 2 children through Compassion for the past year and it is an awesome experience. When I first started sponsoring Juny from Honduras, I wasn't sure what to expect – what do I write, what will she write to me etc – I honestly believed I was going to be faced with the stereotypical British teenager attitdue of 'You think your so much better than me because you can afford to sponsor a poor little child in a foreign Country which you only do to feel good about yourself' but I couldn't have been more wrong. The letters you receive are so personal and heartfelt that you genuinely know these children appreciate God putting you in their lives and vice-versa.
And I've seen some videos of Dr Stafford talking about Compassion in general and one just after the quake in Haiti and he speaks so passionately about the centers and the children they are helping that you know it's totally legit. That passion and compassion also shows how loved the children are in the center. It's an awesome organisation that I am so pleased I heard about.
Thanks for bringing it to more people's attention, Bianca 🙂
Oh Suzanne, that's amazing!!! Two children are blessed because of you. I hope that one day you can meet them! Pray about connecting with sweet Juny 🙂 It'll be a life-changing experience…
I sponsor a little Jamacian boy mon. I went on a missions trip to Jamaica and was really torn with all the children there that have parents but for one reason or another are in orphanages. So when got home I decided to sponsor a child through the mission I went with.
Through hard financial times like we have seen here in the U.S.A. recently I had thought about giving up sponsoring, but my mother challenged me to be absolutely sure I could not afford it first. And you know what? I may not have money for much of anything else but, Praise God, I have always had that $25. 🙂
Eeeeek. You brought up such a good point. In light of my upcoming wedding, I thought out saving the money for the wedding, but in the grand scheme of things, the blessing is greater to give.
Thanks for sharing!
John and I did donations for our wedding in lieu of gifts… we picked a variety of organizations to donate to – Compassion was one of them – because we wanted the first fruits of our marriage to be to giving. it was the coolest thing ever 🙂
All summer, sponsoring a child has been in the back of my mind and I really wanted to do it, but living on a college student budget stopped me from doing it. Today I decided to just go for it. I am now sponsoring a little girl from Thailand! I am so excited to be able to be a part of her life! Thanks for your encouraging post!
YAY! That's awesome!!!! WOOHOO. I'm so proud of you.
Here's an idea:
You go to college right? Why not ask a few people to chip in to sponsor this child? Not only will you be blessed to introduce people to this idea, but it'll help you all share in supporting her educational journey as well!
Just a thought 😉 I'm so happy for you and I hope you find a PERFECT match!
John and I sponsor two little girls from the Philippines through Compassion. I also helped build a Compassion center in Guatemala in 2003. To say I'm a fan is an understatement!__Through letters with Nica (my one sponsored child) – I have watched God transform her life. When she was younger I'd write letters and say "study hard" or "pray" or "continue singing for Jesus" (cuz her mom had written me telling me she was having troubles in studies, or singing something at church, or learning how to pray)…. and I would get letters back from her mom saying things like, "Ever since you sent that last letter my daughter has been singing non-stop!" or "My daughter walks around our house praying all day for things" … Nica is now at the top of her class, she is in the class leadership (class government) and has blown the doors off of just about every academic achievement she could earn.____To say sponsorship doesn't make a difference is to say that God never multiplied the fish and loaves. ____To tell you all her family has prayed into my life would be a whole nother post :)__
Thank you for sharing your story! I hope others are inspired to do the same! Fishes and loaves… fishes and loaves.
My fiance is involved with missions as well so we are super excited to see what comes next for us 🙂
We sponsor two kids! One girl my daughters age and a boy my sons age. It's fun because the kids really are interested in each other. It's been an awesome lesson for OUR kids in how blessed they are & what TRUE wealth is. Our compassion kids don't have a lot financially but they have loving families and I love it when they share about their lives, responsibilities, what they do for fun, etc.
We are MORE blessed for sponsoring than I think they are receiving our financial support. Truly.
Don't ask me why, but I'm emotional reading this. I want to do the same with my step-kids. I want to be a fun mom like you. Normal, silly, slightly off-kilter, and fun.
Thanks for sharing.
I love that you think me slightly off kilter! 😉 I'm actually totally edified by that, to quote my BFF James. 😉
Together, my roommate and I decided to sponsor children (well, I guess we did it individually- each sponsoring one…but we still did it together). We're both recent college grads working for nonprofits so we really didn't know how we were going to make it work. So we decided we'd have to do without something. So, we gave up cable. Not a big deal, right? Actually it's been one of the hardest things ever but also so gratifying….we stopped watching pointless television ALL THE TIME and thankfully hulu let's us watch all the stupid teenage drama shows that we were missing. But it is definitely worth it- even though my "kid" as I call him is too little to write- I get letters from people that work with him. The day I got a letter saying that sweet Debu is especially loved among the staff because of his sweet demeanor I literally cried reading it. I'm young and so much of my life I spend taking care of me and doing stuff for me and buying stuff I want and it's ridiculous….but sponsoring Debu has taught me so much and it's amazing how I can love a child that is way across the world so much.
Yeeeee boy! That's so rad!!!!
When I read you gave up cable, I was like, "NO WAY!" I don't watch much television, but I would feel sad letting go of Project Runway 😉
Kudos and keep it up!
Ok. I feel like a big fat loser for not sponsoring a child. only because i have felt the prompting before and DENIED it. *sigh* these are beautiful stories.
…BUT on mother's day this year, my mom (and my sister in law the day prior) had a "vision" that i had a little boy. Yeah. My mom CONGRATULATED me at the dinner table….weird. I laughed nervously and Noel had a heart attack (and a stroke)….the 1:1 ratio of 2 kidlets is perfect! 😉 so I think I should sponsor a compassionate child…a boy….a peruvian boy who looks like my husand…lest I become preggers!!! 😀
okay. silliness aside…it's a blessing to see God use this ministry to reach these littles….i hope my little family will chose to do this when we have a little extra cash (we don't have cable, so I might have to give up water….or gas!) and um, YOU, my dear need to be the next compassion blogger! Yay! 😉 Consider that a word from the Lord. Hahaha! (Am I making you blink profusely! 😉
My story is more a funny one…I used to write letters to the little girl that my mom sponsored but when I got married, I took on my husbands three boys to start writing. To show them that we had gotten married and was a part of the fam now we sent a wedding picture and along with that my husband had sent a picture of a roadrunner so they could see a little bit more about Arizona, where we live.
In a letter back to us, sweet Victor from Peru wrote: "I want to thank you for the letter and photo of your girlfriend (I'm the wife, ahem!!) She is beautiful as well as the greater roadrunner."
And there you have it…I'm as beautiful as a roadrunner….what every girl dreams to be!! 😀
Hey Bianca!
I sponsor a little boy named Bruno in Brazil. I get letters from him and cute little picture that I hang on our fridge:) It makes me smile knowing that God can use my life to help someone all the way in Brazil get an education and the necessities he needs to live on everyday. I know there are people right around me who could use some help as well… I want my eyes to be opened even more to showing the love of Jesus to those right under my nose. And usually it's no sacrifice at all, but a true joy!
I have always wanted to sponser a child. I know that God will provide the money needed, if it's His will. Thank you for sharing about this great organization!! Have a blessed day!! 🙂
I sponsor a little girl that lives in Columbia. My grandmother was born in Columbia (but of Dutch/Irish/Heinz 57 decent) and I feel a little connection because of that. It was truly been a blessing and joy to see her growth not only physically in pictures, but also spiritually in her letters. Letters…that is the area that I'm horrible at, writing Gabriela on a regular basis…

Thanks for your post. I would love to say this that the first thing you will need to complete is check if you really need repairing credit. To do that you must get your hands on a replica of your credit rating. That should never be difficult, ever since the government makes it necessary that you are allowed to acquire one no cost copy of your real credit report on a yearly basis. You just have to consult the right folks. You can either check out the website for that Federal Trade Commission or even contact one of the leading credit agencies straight.
