As a child I thought I could take over the world. I was so adamant it was possible, I recorded myself on cassette tapes reporting the news like Connie Chung and boldly confirmed that drug trafficking and gang wars have come to a glorious end, hungry children were fed, and homeless people finally had homes. I sounded like a prepubescent politician more than a journalist, but it was my news show and I had the power to push record.

But one day after pushing the stop button on my Casio cassette recorder, my dreams stopped as the red record button popped up. It all ended.

I listened to the voices around me and thought there was nothing I could do. I wasn’t able to change the world, to make a difference, to make things better. I was just a voice, in a room, with a Casio cassette recorder.

As I recounted that memory to 1,000 Grand Canyon University students, I remembered the day I gave up believing I was able. Doubt slowly continued to creep into my college years where it manifested in disbelief that not only was I unable, but ultimately that God was unable. Unable to do, be, change. Unable to feel, hear, care. Unable to move, alter, manifest.

In moments of looking forward in doubts, we need to hit the pause button on Life’s Casio cassette player and look back. Look back at how He did, what He did, and why He did what He did. He heard, felt, and cared. He moved, altered, and healed. He was ABLE… even when we feel like He isn’t.

Faith is simply believing God is able to do what others deem impossible. The past victories in my life gave me the ability to hope. Hope has reinstated my ability to trust. Yes, trust God is able to use me, and us, to change the world.

Don’t hit the stop button on the soundtrack of Life. Pause and rewind to see what God has done. He is able.

“I am the Lord, the God of all the peoples of the world. Is anything too hard for me?”  Jeremiah 32:27

[If you’re in the Phoenix area tonight, we’ll be talking about part two of this talk. Not only is God able, He’s willing! 8:00pm on the GCU campus gym 🙂 ]
