The ziploc baggie contained nothing more than a sandwich. A simple bologna and cheese sandwich. But to her, it was so much more.
The assignment was to talk about something that showed you about Jesus. The average third grader probably brought in a Bible or hymnal, but not her. She brought in a sandwich and endured the taunts and jeers of her classmates. Timid by nature and a bit reserved in front of adolescent eyes, she held on to the plastic baggie and explained why the sandwich was where she saw Jesus.

Near the hip of their mother, a four year-old child was asked to pray for a large, African-American homeless woman who felt safe in the unassuming presence of someone under three feet tall. The mighty yet small prayer warrior prayed a short blessing over the woman and her sister handed her a sandwich. A bologna and cheese sandwich.
Now she stood in front of her classmates whose taunts had silenced as she said she saw Jesus as she passed out a sandwich to someone who needed more than bologna and cheese sandwich. She needed Jesus.
As Susan told me this story, I was moved and convicted by the simplicity of how her daughters met with Jesus in a way less formal than a church pew, a prayer circle, or sung song. I get caught up with the formalities that I miss the banalities of life and miracles and simple blessing found in clear ziploc baggies.
So I ask the same question: Where do you see Jesus?
yesterday i was going through my hubby’s tools looking for cleaning supplies (he’s a packy rat) when i saw HUGE nails.. I mean HUGE! I saw them and i stopped on my tracks.. i stared at them intently, grabbed one and placed it on my hand with the pointy tip touching my skin. and i fell.. i literally fell and sobbed and sobbed. How? Why? But Lord? I cannot, will not ever know how strong his love is for me. my mind just cannot comprehend it.. I peeled myself off the floor and sat and read.. i stopped cleaning which at the time thought it was soo important. His Word truly is sweeter than honey.
There's tons of stories but this one marks a huge change .
The story the resonates most in my memory is…
November 2008. In the mist and height of realizing that I was loosing my home and car I saw Jesus in the faces of orphnes in Mexico. While my world was consumed with keeping up with the social the norm he reminded me that I'm simply blessed to live in the States and this kids were blessed to have visotrs love them. I was broken.
I see Jesus In the eyes of people, like my mother, who see past the exterior and sees into the heart of those around her . People who do not pass judgment on others but minister with mercy and love while still maintaining the truth of who God is and the integrity of His word! I see Jesus all over that!

Recently I have had to start helping my mother bathe. I see Jesus in the nurses who carefully help me bathe her, who care about her enjoying the hot water and soap and make sure she is comepletely dry before putting her clothes on her. It is definitely hard, in more ways than one to help your mother bathe when she can't control her bladder or bowels, but its humbling. I can enjoy it, because I am delighting the Lord by helping them and her with this seemingly simple act.
I see Jesus in the eyes of my Mother, she lost her mother 41 years ago whilst she was pregnant for me. Riding to the hospital in the back of the ambulance on a dreary snowy day, her mom said to her look at how beautiful it is outside. When my mom turned to look out the window of the ambulance she saw a beautiful spring meadow! She was 17 years old that day her mother went home to be with Jesus. She lost two babies born after me. Now 41 years later, in just the past year she has buried both of her brothers and now her 89 year old father is not far behind! But because of that ambulance ride with her mother in 1969 she knows what is waiting for her and every believer and Jesus shines through her on a daily basis. This is a woman whom has endured the loss of her own children, her only siblings, her mother when she needed her most, and now her father is on his way out, but her faith has never been shaken, and her love and trust is as strong as ever! yep I see Jesus in my mom and I am proud to have her! Love you mom!

This was a beautiful post Bianca and the comments were equally as beautiful. I have nothing quite as eloquent or tear inducing but I saw Jesus this weekend when a couple in our church, used to being abused and mistreated by former church communities (yes more than one), were moved to tears as their new church family surrounded and supported them in an unexpected medical emergency. The acts were simple, a text to check on the kids, a phone call to bring dinner and non-stop visitors to the hospital but through each simple act Jesus was present and this family is forever changed by those simple acts. Thank you for sharing this story.

Hi Rae! Great question. I debated noting her race and size, but by writing it out, it created a polarity between a four year-old Asain girl and a large, African American woman. Had I left out just a key element, the word picture might not be as impactful. I hope this makes sense.
